PCs Vs. Macs

Once people use a computer, they are usually loyal to a type. The two most popular are the PC (IBM, Dell, HP, etc.) and the Apple (a.k.a. Macintosh, Mac or any of the line of products starting with “I” such as iMac or iPod).

PCs have traditionally dominated the business world and have higher rates of sales worldwide. The PC is much like the early Ford Model-T, a simple design to which most computer companies make components that can be added to it. It runs on the largest selling operating system, Windows.

Macs have typically been used in schools as well as creative settings (such as ad agencies and in photography). These computers are designed with the latest technology, but few options for the consumer to choose with the belief that Apple has put in everything you need. Also, until recently, all Macs ran on their own operating system, OS and OSX, that is not compatible with other computers (PCs). Mac still runs OSX, but can also run the popular PC operating system Windows.

Each of the computer systems has its own benefits and drawbacks. Here are some pros and cons for the PC and Mac to aid you in making a choice.

PC Pros

  • The PC with Windows operating system is the most popular, and therefore extremely compatible with other computers.
  • You will always be able to find PC parts, software, and professionals to work on your computer.
  • There are more types and variety of PCs on the market.
  • Software on the market is primarily made and distributed for PCs.

PC Cons

  • PCs in their desktop form are usually larger than Mac desktops.
  • You cannot purchase a Mac OS operating system for a PC.
  • PCs do not retain their resale value as well as Macs.
  • Since owning a PC is the majority, PCs lack the “coolness factor” of a Mac.
  • Windows is more susceptible to corruption from viruses.

Mac Pros

  • Macs were created for ease of use and seamless compatibility across its range of products.
  • Many of Mac’s computer designs are all in one, so there aren’t a lot of parts to figure out.
  • Macs are known for their multimedia capabilities. Many come with video editing software and higher processing power, for video game playing, music creation, and art creation.
  • Because so many fewer people own Apples, there are few, if any, viruses for them.
  • You can get versions of Windows to run on a Mac. This allows you to have the best of both worlds.

Mac Cons

  • The Macintosh operating system can only be used on Macintosh computers.
  • Dollar for dollar, the Mac is more expensive than the PC. However, the technology and performance you get for the price, many say, is unbeatable.
  • When you travel around the U.S., most places and people have PCs. If you’re a Mac user, it may be hard to find something compatible quickly.
  • Less variety when it comes to computer style and software.
